The Cascade of the Night

The tresses of the waterfall reflect the dusk
As rippling shadows come to execute my soul.
The cascade of the night is conquering the sky.

An eagle flies above — a warning in his cry —
Yet I cannot resist admiring the way
The tresses of the waterfall reflect the dusk.

Abandon this idea, conscience says to me.
But wicked satisfaction blocks the heavens’ light
As rippling shadows come to execute my soul.

I’ve chosen to surrender. I won’t try to run.
I whisper my goodbyes to the defeated sun;
The cascade of the night is conquering the sky…

Written in response to Jane Dougherty’s poetry challenge. This is my first time writing a cascade and I must admit, it was difficult as hell, but an intriguing form nonetheless. I’ll definitely try writing more of these.
